Cranberry To Begin Crackdown On E-Bike Safety Violations

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — Despite township police educational initiatives in recent months regarding the safe and lawful operation of e-bikes and other electric recreational vehicles, police have noticed that unsafe and unlawful operation of such vehicles continues.

So township police will begin to cracking down on such practices.

"Moving forward, officers will take enforcement action when violations are observed," Police Chief Ken Ruckel said.

"Depending on the circumstances, enforcement may include the issuance of summary citations and the seizure or impoundment of the vehicle when permitted by law. In addition, both children and parents could face possible towing, impoundment, and hazardous item recycling fees."

Ruckel said that in addition to creating safety risks for riders, pedestrians and motorists, improper use of electronic vehicles can damage parks, fields, trails, landscaping and both public and private property.

The department is strongly encouraging parents and guardians to speak with their children about where and how these vehicles may legally be operated. Riders are responsible for understanding and following all applicable laws and local regulations and for respecting the property of others.

"Our goal is to protect riders, pedestrians, motorists, community property, and everyone who uses our neighborhoods, roadways, and parks," Ruckel said. "We appreciate the community’s cooperation."
