The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that any Girl Scout can earn. These young women have publicly affirmed that they believe that a person no matter how young can make a lasting difference in the world in which they live. A Girl Scout Gold Awardee is a high school student who has taken on the challenge of meeting a need in her community and completed steps to solve that need. She has demonstrated long term commitment, an ability to work with a team of people, and self-motivation that will drive her well into her future. These leaders oftentimes go on to earn substantial college scholarships for their future studies.
This past year, Leah Kallop, member of Cranberry Troop 20520, earned her Gold Award. For her project, she led a group in painting a large scale map of the US on the blacktop behind Haine Elementary School. She also prepared a booklet of games that could be used by the teachers to help their students use the map as they learned about the different states. Her project was called “Learn and Play Your Way Across the USA”. Teachers have reported back to Leah that the students are having a lot of fun using the map during class time and recess!
We are so proud of Leah and the impact that she is having on students that she has met and students that will benefit from her project but will never know who made it available for them. The lasting impact that education has on even just one student multiplies as that student grows and learns. Thanks to Leah there is one more resource for that to happen.
Good luck to Leah as she branches out as a Girl Scout Gold Awardee and hopefully she will return not just as a scout herself but as a successful mentor for future scouts.
