La-Z-Boy Among Stores Slated for Cranberry Crossroads

A La-Z-Boy furniture store is among the retailers planned for the Cranberry Crossroads development now under construction on Route 228.

Plans for the 12,063 square-foot store were briefly introduced Monday at the Cranberry Planning Commission's workshop meeting. Officials are expected to review the plans in more detail at their next meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 4 at the

If the planning commission green lights the plans, they next would be sent to the township board of supervisors for final approval.

The La-Z-Boy store would be located to the left of the two-story Dick’s Sporting Goods, which, once built, will be the anchor to the 98,940-square-feet retail space. A GetGo gas station and convenience store and a Men’s Warehouse clothing store also are planned for the complex. 

Although La-Z-Boy closed four Pittsburgh-area stores (located in Monroeville, McMurray, McCandless and North Fayette) in 2007, Forbes Magazine named the company one of its 10 Comeback Brands of 2011. Actress Brooke Shields currently is a spokeswoman for the company and offers decorating tips, recipes and more on the La-Z-Boy website.

ECHO Realty, a Pittsburgh-based real estate and retail development company, is developing the shopping center. Pittsburgh's Elmhurst Group also is developing 90,000 square feet of business and professional office space in the same area.

Once finished, the plaza will include pedestrian and bike paths. There also are plans for a gazebo, trees, shrubs, benches and other landscaping details required by the township’s streetscape enhancement ordinance.

5th Avenue Fido

Planning commission members also got their first glimpse at plans for 5th Avenue Fido, a 9,776 square foot dog kennel.

Ron Henshaw, Cranberry's director of community development, said 5th Avenue Fido, which he described as having more amenities than the average kennel, would be located along Route 19 at the old Northgate Honda building, which has been vacant for at least six years.

“That building has been sitting empty for a long time,” he said.

5th Avenue Fido would add a small fenced-in area to the building, Henshaw said. He noted the township is pleased with plans for the kennel because the commercial location isn’t near any homes.

“No residents are affected by this, which is a fantastic thing,” he said.

Planning officials are expected to review the plan in more detail at the June 4 meeting.
