Seneca Valley Steamrolls To Win In Latest Academic Decathlon

The competition wasn't even close.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA - The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon Team placed first out of 14 other schools in the recent PA Western Regional Academic Decathlon Competition at Edinboro University.

Every high school competed with a team of nine students (three in each division). Over the two-day competition, students competed in all 10 events: art, music, literature, social science, economics, math, science, essay, speech and interview.

The following students finished as team medalists:

  • Essay: Katie Parker, Rishin Sharma
  • Music: Julia Allman, Katie Parker, Logan Glatz, Katie Bablak, Mark Hemmerlin, Rishin Sharma, Nishant Jayachandran
  • Art: Gabe Sutherland, Katie Parker, Julia Allman, Katie Bablak, Logan Glatz, Rishin Sharma
  • Literature: Gabe Sutherland, Julia Allman, Katie Bablak, Rishin Sharma
  • Economics: Gabe Sutherland, Julia Allman, Katie Parker, Katie Bablak, Mark Hemmerlin, Rishin Sharma
  • Science: Logan Glatz, Katie Bablak, Mark Hemmerlin
  • Interview: Katie Parker, Rishin Sharma, Nishant Jayachandran
  • Speech: Julia Allman, Katie Parker, Mark Hemmerlin, Rishin Sharma, Ryan Lipscomb
  • Social Science: Gabe Sutherland, Julia Allman, Katie Bablak, Rishin Sharma, Nishant Jayachandran
  • Math: Katie Parker, Logan Glatz, Katie Bablak, Mark Hemmerlin, Rishin Sharma, Nishant Jayachandran, Ryan Lipscomb


Four Seneca Valley students were also in the top nine highest scoring students in each division of the entire competition. The overall highest scoring students:

The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon Team, grades 9-12, includes Julia Allman, Katie Parker, Gabe Sutherland, Logan Glatz, Nick Folino, Mark Hemmerlin, Megan Spark, Abigail Roeckmann, Steven Yang, Kate Lipscomb, Ryan Lipscomb, Nishant Jayachandran, Megan Neely, Christina Yang, Jessie Glatz, Katie Bablak, Ashley Conroy and Mia Chevallier, Will Firman and Nik Schuster.

The team’s next event will be a state competition held in Carlisle in March.
