The Marple Newtown Community Band will perform a work by local composer Alfred Blatter at its FREE concert on Saturday, December 6, at 7 p.m., at The Performing Arts Complex of Delaware County (101 Plush Mill Rd, Wallingford, PA 19086).In addition to “The Gliding Girl,” a tango by John Philip Sousa, “Ballet and Duet” from Tchaikovsky’s opera Pique Dame, and highlights from The Music Man and The Sound of Music, as well as holiday works to usher in the Hanukkah and Christmas seasons, the MNCB will include in its program “Rotary Park” by Blatter, a Middletown resident.Blatter has taught at Marshall University, The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Drexel University. He’s been a member of The United States Army Band, The Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and The Chester County Band. He currently teaches at The Curtis Institute of Music.Although “Rotary Park” more traditional in style, Blatter works with more modernist styles, as well. His repertoire of compositions includes musicals, symphonies, a concerto for percussion and orchestra, a Ceremonial Cantata for chorus and orchestra (commissioned by Drexel University), songs, string quartets and arrangements. He is the author of Instrumentation/Orchestration and Revisiting Music Theory.“Each piece is different,” he explained, “And each presents its own set of problems to solve. But the composer merely creates an opportunity for musicians to communicate with listeners. A successful performance is whenever that communication takes place.”For more information, call 610-308-8692, or go online to www.mncb.org.
