BUCKS COUNTY, PA — This week, Patch is spotlighting some of Bucks County's "hidden" restaurant gems. With summer's unofficial arrival this weekend comes the chance to delve into the county's delicious restaurant scene. And there's plenty out there to experience if you know where to go and what to look for.

The Water Wheel Tavern - The Hidden Gem of Doylestown

The Water Wheel Tavern in Doylestown bills itself as the "Hidden Gem" of Doylestown. The historic Bucks County landmark was originally built in 1714 by John Dyer, an English Quaker. It existed for centuries as a water wheel driven grist mill and later hosted both a post office and a general store. The mill was transformed into an inn and tavern with the repeal of prohibition in 1933. Major renovations in recent years by new ownership has transformed Water Wheel Tavern into a rare combination of character, charm and casual gourmet dining. Featuring sustainable menus for all tastes and culinary ranges, folks from all over Bucks County and beyond who find their way here enjoy the diversity of food, weekly menu specialties, libations and an atmosphere where great food and great times have become the centerpiece. This week's specials include Gnocchi Poutine (Braised Short Rib, Fried Cheese Curd, Demi-Glace, Queso Blanco), Porcini Dusted Sea Scallops Zucchini ribbons, prosciutto, smoked tomato buerre blanc, Southwest Shrimp Salad (Corn Blackbean Salsa, Cheddar Jack Cheese, Tortilla, Pepita, Tomato, Mixed Greens, Sriracha Ranch), Espresso Rubbed Flat Iron, Chimmichuri (grilled Potato Wedge, Sweet Pea Puree) and Tiramisu (Espresso, Cocoa and Cream). "We invite you to stop in for a drink, lunch or dinner or just a casual visit to see for yourself how Water Wheel Tavern has become the Hidden Gem of Doylestown," says its website.

Café Antonio At The Bridge In Morrisville Borough

Within view of the Calhoun Street Bridge and in the shadow of New Jersey's capital city, Café Antonio serves some remarkable food in an Old World atmosphere in Morrisville Borough . This is where classic and contemporary Italian cuisines intermingle with meals created with love, where tantalizing aromas are but a precursor to the palate-pleasing flavors that await you, whether discovered in its traditional Italian dishes or any of the chef’s delectable daily specials. Locals are already big fans of this hidden Italian gem. This is one of the only places in Bucks County where you can order one of my favorite dishes - chicken champagne - sauteed chicken in a champagne cream sauce with peaches. I promise that once you taste it, you'll be a fan. And, of course, you can't leave Cafe Antonio without some homemade bread. It comes hot out of the oven. They also make their hot sandwiches with the same bread. "We at Café Antonio are committed to creating and serving only food meeting the highest standards of quality, freshness and seasonality and consistently providing our customers with impeccable service while demonstrating an unparalleled caliber of warmth, hospitality, knowledge and professionalism," reads their website.

Vecchia Osteria by Pasquale: Authentic Italian In Newtown

This hidden gem could easily be overlooked, tucked away in a corner of the Newtown Depot Shopping Center not readily seen from the nearby Richboro Road. Vecchia Osteria by Pasquale is all about the food, the wine and the companionship of family and friends. The Palino family owns and operates Vecchia Osteria where they have built a reputation for authentic Italian dishes and endeared themselves to the community. "We pride ourselves on producing not only high-quality food, but high-quality experiences," says Pasquale. "We cherish the concept of food being a binder. Every single milestone we have in our lives is always surrounded by food and people you love." The menu is chock full of authentic southern Italian cuisine from its handmade pasta dishes to its chicken, veal and fish dishes. Since the family opened the restaurant in 2009, its mission has been to provide a feeling of love and familiarity. “I love it here. I love the people of Newtown,” said Pasquale. Pasquale said he will never forget how the people of Newtown and Bucks County helped him through the pandemic. Pasquale said when they needed the town the most, it responded with take out orders and gift card purchases, which literally kept the restaurant alive. The restaurant was recently featured on the Magnolia Network show, "Family Restaurant" hosted by Andrew Zimmern who visits families across the United States to enjoy their family meals and explore how culture influences how and what people eat.
