BUCKS COUNTY, PA —May is one of the best months of the year.

The weather is warming and everything seems to be coming to life. More festivals and farmers markets are showing signs of life and several holidays —Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day —are on the calendar before one of the biggest ones of the year hits.

That would be Memorial Day and the unofficial launch of summer.

Ah summer, when you think of it, you can just feel the ocean breeze, the visits to the Jersey Shore, and the fresh fruit found at stands and supermarkets.

One of those fruits is strawberries. Peddler's Village is getting ahead of everyone this weekend regarding the delicious red fruit that is the perfect topping on whipped cream for ice cream sundaes or just eating alone.

These are some of the events taking place this weekend in Bucks County:

Strawberry Reigns Supreme At Peddler's Village

Peddler's Village will celebrate the strawberry this weekend during its annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The mouth-watering weekend will include strawberry-themed food and beverages, live music and entertainment, food trucks, and kids’ activities.

Fresh-baked strawberry pies, desserts, and merchandise will be available for sale, and a strawberry pie-eating contest for adults and children will be held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Peddler's Village shops will be open until 8 p.m. on Saturday. Admission and parking are free.

Notorious Bucks County Doan Gang Rides Again

Bucks County's notorious Doan Gang, known for its legendary robberies and criminal exploits, rides again in a new major exhibition opening this weekend at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown.

"The Doan Gang: Outlaws of the Revolution" explores the history and intrigue of a group of Revolutionary War-era Loyalists whose legend lives on today.

Some called them villains; others hailed them as heroes. Museum visitors will discover the untold stories of the Doan Gang and journey through a world of espionage, legendary robberies, and mythical lost treasure in the heart of Revolutionary Bucks County.

Bucks High School Poet Of The Year To Read Works

Bucks County's High School Poet of the Year, Neshaminy senior Cecelia Shine, will read from her works on Saturday, May 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. during a public Reading + Celebration in Tyler Hall on Bucks County Community College’s Newtown Campus

Hailing from Neshaminy High School, Shine rose to the top of more than 100 entries to be named the 2024 Bucks County High School Poet of the Year, announced officials at Bucks County Community College. The 37th annual contest is part of the Bucks County Poet Laureate Program administered by the College.

Shine’s three poem submissions were entitled “one heart too many,” “The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine” and “it might be just a dream.”

Bucks County Designer House Open For Tours

This year's Bucks County Designer House and Gardens - the stately Sycamore Lane Farm in Hilltown Township - is open for public tours through May 26 to benefit the VIA Maternity Center at Doylestown Hospital and the charitable missions of the Village Improvement Association.

The Bucks County Designer House is a spacious home that's made available by a homeowner and is completely redecorated by interior designers and landscapers and then opened to the public for tours.

This year, visitors are invited to tour 35 different design spaces and 14 landscape areas throughout the house and gardens. They may also shop designer decor throughout the property and at the 14 boutique locations in the bank barn. An on-site cafe will serve sandwiches, soup, and other light fare. Wine from Bishop Vineyard & Winery will be available for purchase and Owowcow Creamery will provide a signature ice cream flavor created especially for the event.

The Designer House, located at 1421 Route 313, Hilltown, PA 18927, is open Monday to Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased online or at the door. Senior tickets ($40) are only available at the door. The house is not handicapped accessible.

Kentucky Derby Day Is Off To The Races

And they're off... In celebration of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, Parx Racing will host its annual Kentucky Derby Day full of live music, family-friendly activities, and live horse racing. Admission is free to the outdoor event and all ages are welcome.

Live racing starts at 12:40 p.m. and the derby will be shown on the track’s giant infield television at 6:45 p.m. Attendees of Kentucky Derby Day will enjoy live music from Fish Out of Water, food and beverage specials, souvenir merchandise, and more. Parx Racing will have free pony rides, moon bounces, face painting, and more fun for all ages.
