7 Critical Mistakes Women Golfers Make (And How to Instantly Fix Them)

Stop listening to bad advice and start playing the best golf of your life.

After more than a decade of coaching amateur golfers, I’ve seen it all. But when it comes to women’s golf, I consistently see the same handful of swing faults and mental roadblocks holding incredibly talented players back from reaching their true potential.

Let's be candid: men and women are built differently. While men might rely on raw upper-body muscle to muscle the ball down the fairway, a woman's strength on the golf course lies in rhythm, flexibility, and a highly efficient kinematic sequence. When you unlock those traits, the ball flight is a thing of beauty.

However, women and men often absorb golf instruction differently. Too many female golfers are playing with bad advice, ill-fitting equipment, and a lack of permission to just be athletic. If you want to shoot lower scores, generate effortless clubhead speed, and actually enjoy your time on the links, it’s time to rewrite the script.

Here are the top seven mistakes I see women golfers making—and the actionable, in-depth fixes you need to transform your game this season.

1. Believing the "Keep Your Head Down" Myth

If I had a dollar for every time a female student told me, “I know, my husband/friend told me I need to keep my head down,” I’d be retired. This is the single worst piece of golf advice in the history of the sport.

The Problem: Trying to keep your head pinned to your chest creates a rigid, locked-up posture. It absolutely destroys your ability to make a full shoulder turn, killing your swing mechanics and robbing you of power. When your head is glued down, your backswing collapses, and you are forced to chop at the ball using only your arms.

The Fix: * Chin Up: At address, lift your chin up slightly as if you are looking over the net on a tennis court, gazing down at the ball using your peripheral vision.

  • Free the Turn: This simple adjustment frees up space for your left shoulder (for right-handed golfers) to sweep cleanly under your chin during the backswing.
  • Track the Flight: Allow your head to naturally release and follow the ball post-impact. A free-flowing head promotes a free-flowing, powerful golf swing.

2. Settling for Lacklustre, Defensive Posture

Far too many women step up to the golf ball in a defensive, non-athletic stance. They arrive on the lesson tee with their hips tucked under and their posture too upright, almost as if they are trying to hide their lower body.

The Problem: Tucking your pelvis under destroys dynamic balance. It leads to a cascade of power-sapping swing faults: over-swinging, collapsing the arms, casting the club from the top, and scooping the golf ball at impact instead of compressing it. You cannot hit powerful golf shots from a weak setup.

The Fix:

  • The Mini-Shake: Don’t be shy about your setup. Get your weight balanced over the balls of your feet, hinge from your hips, and feel like you are sticking your backside out. Give it a mini-shake to release the tension!
  • Athletic Readiness: You should feel like a shortstop getting ready to field a ground ball or a tennis player waiting for a serve. No one is judging your posture; they’ll only be watching your ball sail down the middle of the fairway.
  • Off-Course Tip: Build glute and core strength in the gym. A strong lower body is the engine of a powerful golf swing and makes holding this athletic posture effortless.

3. Suffering from "Paralysis by Analysis"

Golf is a complex game, but it cannot be played with a crowded mind. I frequently see female golfers arrive for a lesson armed with a six-point mental checklist before they even take the club back.

The Problem: Overthinking the movement of the golf swing stunts your natural athleticism. You wouldn't consciously think about firing your quadriceps and hinging your ankles to walk down the stairs, so why do it with a 7-iron? All that theory creates a jerky, disconnected swing.

The Fix:

  • Streamline the Setup: Build a repeatable pre-shot routine so your address position becomes automatic.
  • One Swing Thought Only: Once you are over the ball, allow yourself exactly one simple swing thought or visual cue (e.g., "smooth tempo," "turn your back to the target," or "finish high").
  • Trust Your Body: If your mind is cluttered, book a session with a PGA professional to clear the slate, get a fresh start, and re-programme your swing.

4. The Paralyzing Fear of Bunker Play

For many women, hitting a golf ball out of the sand induces genuine dread. They see a greenside bunker not as a standard golf shot, but as a trap they will never escape.

The Problem: Fear of failure causes tension, and tension kills acceleration. To execute a proper bunker shot, the clubhead must accelerate through the sand. When you decelerate out of fear, the club digs, and the ball stays right where it is.

The Fix:

  • Rehearse the Finish: Before you even step into the sand, take aggressive practice swings outside the bunker. Brush the grass and force yourself to hold a full, balanced finish.
  • Commit to the Speed: Pick a conservative target in the middle of the green. Open your clubface slightly, aim to enter the sand a couple of inches behind the golf ball, and swing with commitment.
  • Sand is Your Friend: Remember, this is the only shot in golf where you don't actually hit the ball! You are splashing the sand out of the bunker, and the ball simply rides the wave. Extra confidence and a little speed are your best friends here.

5. Using Ill-Fitting, Hand-Me-Down Clubs

It is incredibly common for female beginners—and even experienced players—to use golf clubs found in the back of a garage or handed down by a spouse.

The Problem: Men's clubs are generally too long, too heavy, and have shafts that are far too stiff. Conversely, some off-the-rack women's starter sets are too light and whippy for a woman with an athletic background. Using the wrong equipment forces you to make unnatural swing compensations just to make contact.

The Fix:

  • Get Custom Fit: Custom club fitting is not just for touring professionals; it is arguably more important for average golfers.
  • Invest in the Driver: At the very least, invest in a modern driver fitted specifically to your clubhead speed, height, and strength. The right shaft flex and clubhead weight will instantly unlock distance and accuracy you didn't know you had.

6. Carrying Unrealistic Expectations Onto the Course

Women are the ultimate multitaskers, constantly juggling careers, families, and massive life events. Yet, many expect to step onto the first tee and play flawlessly despite the chaos of everyday life.

The Problem: I recently had a student who was frustrated with her poor play. She then casually mentioned she had just rushed to the course from dropping her husband off at chemotherapy. Life stress directly impacts focus, tempo, and physical tension. Expecting perfection when your mental bandwidth is tapped out only leads to frustration.

The Fix:

  • Be Kind to Yourself: We expect to be competent in everything, all the time. Rewind and reset.
  • Reframe Your Round: Lower your scoring expectations on the days when life is heavy. Accept golf for what it needs to be in that moment: a mental break, fresh air, camaraderie with friends, and some much-needed headspace. Perspective is the ultimate scorecard saver.

7. Forcing the "Traditional" Golf Mold

There is a lingering perception that to be a "real" golfer, you must hold an expensive country club membership, grind through 18 holes of rigid stroke play, and treat the game with extreme seriousness.

The Problem: Feeling pressured to fit into a traditional mold that doesn't align with your lifestyle or personality drains the joy out of the sport. If you aren't having fun, you won't practice, and you won't improve.

The Fix:

  • Play Your Way: I often see a flood of relief when I tell my students: You don't have to play that kind of golf. * Find Your Format: Seek out the version of the game that gives you positive energy. Maybe that’s joining a relaxed women's golf community, meeting friends at a simulator or driving range with music playing, or just walking a quick 9 holes in the evening. The game is evolving. Claim your space in it, entirely on your own terms.

The Fairway is Yours

Golf is an incredible, lifelong sport, but it is infinitely more enjoyable when you understand your own swing and feel empowered to play the game your way. Stop settling for frustrating rounds, ill-fitting clubs, and unsolicited swing tips from well-meaning friends.

If you have been struggling, or if you are simply waiting for the right moment to finally pick up a club and see what the game is all about, consider this your official invitation.

Take that leap. Book a lesson with a local Golf Professional who listens to your goals, respects your unique athleticism, and builds a swing around your strengths. A good coach isn't there to criticize; we are there to help you unlock the power, rhythm, and consistency you already possess.

Get out there, shake off the tension, swing with confidence, and start having fun. I promise you—the best golf of your life is just waiting to be unleashed. Let’s get to work!
