The Alignment Illusion: Why You’re Missing Pure Putts (And How to Fix It)
Is Your Setup Lying to You? Discover the Optical Trick that's Sabotaging Your Short Game and Learn to See the Real Line.

Let me paint a picture that I guarantee you know all too well.
You’re staring down a crucial 6-foot putt to save par. You’ve stalked the green, read the subtle break, and picked your line. You step up, get comfortable, and put a pure, buttery stroke on the ball. The pace is perfect. The strike feels solid right off the center of the face.
Yet, the ball starts a hair offline and lips out. You stand there frozen, staring at your putter, wondering, "How in the world did that miss?"

I see this every single week with amateur golfers. You assume it was a mechanical failure—that you pulled it, pushed it, or yipped it. But what if I told you your stroke was perfectly fine?
What if the reason you missed is because you were set up to miss before you ever took the putter back?

Welcome to the Alignment Illusion.
The Anatomy of the Illusion
Golf is a game of millimeters, especially on the greens. But human beings are not equipped with built-in laser levels. Our eyes are situated side-by-side in our skulls, and because we address the golf ball from the side rather than facing the target directly, our optical perception gets distorted.
If your head position, eye line, or posture is even slightly off, a perfectly straight line to the hole will look like it's pointing left or right.
Here is the dangerous part: your brain is a master compensator. If "straight" looks like it's aiming left to your naked eye, your brain will subconsciously force your hands to aim the putter face slightly right to make it feel straight. You hit a perfect, square stroke on a face that is aimed two degrees right, and you miss.
You don't have a stroke problem. You have a perception problem.
The T-Square Diagnostic Drill
If you want to hole more of those agonizing 4-to-8-foot putts, we need to calibrate your eyes. You need to find a setup position where reality matches your perception—where straight genuinely looks straight.
Here is the drill I give my students at Imagen Golf to test their optical baseline. Head to the practice green and grab a piece of string, two tees, and a simple plastic T-square from the hardware store.
- Find the Flat: Find a perfectly straight, perfectly flat 8-foot putt.
- Set the String: Stake one tee directly behind the center of the cup, and the other tee 8 feet away. Pull the string tight between them. This is your absolute, undeniable straight line.
- Place the T-Square: Slide the T-square directly underneath the string right where your golf ball would normally be, aligning the long edge perfectly parallel with the string.
- Remove the Safety Net: Take the string away.
- The Truth Test: Step up to the T-square and take your normal putting stance. Look down at the T-square, and then trace your eyes to the hole.
Does that T-square look perfectly straight and square to the cup?
If it looks like it's aiming left or right, your optical baseline is broken.
The 4 Variables to Calibrate Your Vision
If the T-square looked crooked to you, do not panic. We don't need to rebuild your swing; we just need to adjust your setup. While standing over that T-square, I want you to experiment with tweaking these four variables until the illusion breaks and the line suddenly looks dead straight.
- 1. Distance from the Ball (Eye Position): Where are your eyes falling in relation to the target line? If your eyes are way outside the golf ball, the line will usually look like it’s aiming right. If they are too far inside, it often looks left. Slowly inch closer or further away from the ball.
- 2. Chin Position (Tuck vs. Extension): How high is your head? If your chin is buried in your chest, you are looking out of the tops of your eyes, which distorts the horizon. If your chin is too high, you are looking down your nose. Try raising and lowering your chin a fraction of an inch to see how the target line shifts.
- 3. Neck Tilt (The Ear-to-Shoulder Relationship): This is a massive one. Is your right ear closer to your right shoulder, or is your neck perfectly neutral? If your head is tilted sideways, your eyes are no longer level with the ground. Level your head and watch the optical illusion disappear.
- 4. Nose Direction (Head Rotation): When you look down at the ball, is your nose pointing directly at the top of the ball, or is your head rotated slightly so your nose points an inch behind or in front of it? Slight rotation changes which eye is dominant in the alignment process.
There Is No "Textbook"
You are searching for a combination of those four variables that makes reality look like reality.
I want to be clear: there is no single "correct" look. We are talking about finding what is functional for your unique anatomy and vision. Look at the Tour. Jordan Spieth sets up with visible head rotation, almost looking out of his left eye. Bryson DeChambeau stands incredibly upright with his chin high. Neither setup looks like the traditional textbook, but both have found the precise posture where their eyes stop lying to them.
Your Action Plan
Next time you are at the course, before you go beat range balls, spend 10 minutes on the putting green with a string and a T-square. Periodically check your aim using this system.
When you find the setup where the straight line finally looks straight, memorize how your body feels in that posture. Lock it in. When you give your brain the right information, you give your stroke the freedom to perform.
Calibrate your eyes, eliminate the illusion, and you'll start draining those 4-to-8-footers with absolute confidence.
Keep grinding, keep experimenting, and as always—hit 'em straight.
