BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — "Up In the Air Balloons," a business started by a Buckingham Township mom, has a new home on Edison-Furlong Road across from the Village Barn in Furlong.

After four years of running the business out of her home, Andrea Ferguson has opened a brick-and-mortar store to better serve her customers and her ballooning business.

In preparation for the move, she renovated the new retail and office space, giving it a
new bright and airy paint job and removing the dated shaggy carpeting. The space is now
filled with balloon arches, balloon wands, and other creations, a testament to her creativity.

Up until now, balloons had filled several rooms in her Buckingham Township home, occasionally spilling over into other rooms of her house. Not surprisingly it desensitized her kids as she relates in a story about her son, Colin.

“I remember one birthday I blew up all these balloons and put them in his room. When he saw them, he asked, ‘Why are all these balloons in my room?’ They are for you,” she responded. “He thought that I had to store them in his room.”

Now Ferguson has her own space for her balloons with no chance of them meandering into another part of the house. It’s also a great space to entertain her clients and to share with them the creative possibilities that await their milestone and special occasions, from birthdays, anniversaries and weddings to graduations, corporate events and business events, and lots more.

"Whatever you're planning we got you covered," said Ferguson. "We pride ourselves in making your special event a truly custom affair with exceptionally creative designs."

After four years of running the business out of her home, Buckingham Township mom Andrea Ferguson has opened a brick-and-mortar store to better serve her customers.

Prior to starting her balloon business, Ferguson worked in advertising and marketing before taking a break to start a family. She eventually decided against returning to “that crazy world” and instead found an outlet for her “creative eye and her creative mind” in the world of ballooning.

Four years ago, just prior to COVID, Ferguson launched “Up In The Air Balloons,” which immediately took off. And she has never looked back.

“When I started there weren’t a lot of balloon places. There weren’t a lot of people doing the arches and the garlands in our area,” she said.

When COVID hit, she operated one of the few businesses that didn’t feel the impact of the pandemic. If anything, it boosted sales as people sought alternative ways of reaching out to each other.

The bright and colorful bunches of fun provided the perfect way of keeping in touch. And balloon deliveries took off, she said.

“All through COVID I wasn’t shut down,” said Ferguson . “I was doing a lot of outdoor parades and events.”

So why balloons?

“Balloons make people smile. Balloons bring joy, happiness, and hope. They add that extra something for any occasion,” Ferguson said. “They remind you of a fun time in your childhood. Balloons always bring fun memories.”

“They make everyone feel better,” adds husband Greg. “It’s one of those universal things, but there’s an art form behind it as well that’s being exposed.”

According to Andrea, “Up In The Air Balloons is not your average balloon provider. Our designs will ‘blow away’ you and your guests,” she said.

“I have a true passion for what I do and it shows,” adds Ferguson. “I’m unique. I’m not Party City. I’m not a commodity. I am unique and custom and I will listen to what a customer wants and what their theme is and how can I elevate it and make it that much more special.”

She also prides herself with only offering environmentally friendly, biodegradable balloons.

“The amount of time it takes them to disintegrate is the same amount as a leaf to disintegrate,” she says.

Ferguson also loves her community. “I love the Doylestown community. I grew up in Doylestown. I’m a local native. I grew up in Jamison and I went to East. I went to Warwick, Tamanend and East. Her husband also attended Central Bucks schools.

“The one thing that needs to be addressed and praised is that this business was started by a mom," said Greg. "She saw this obvious niche in the market and created something special with being a mom with two kids. And it has created a really cool model that’s recession-proof. It’s just a great success story.”

Among her many clients are Pine2Pink, which has used its balloon creations for its numerous events and fund fundraiser; Peddler’s Village; Thompson Toyota; Warwick Farm Brewing; Sesame Place; and the Shops at Valley Square.
