The Blindfolded Fix: The One Thing I’d Tell Any Golfer to Change

The One Simple Pre-Swing Fix That Eliminates the "Flip" and Builds a Powerful, Repeating Swing.

I was speaking at a recent event when a gentleman in the front row raised his hand. He asked a question that I think every golf coach gets in one form or another, but he phrased it brilliantly:

"Daniel, if you were completely blindfolded and never even saw my golf swing, what is the ONE thing you would recommend an average golfer do to hit the ball farther, straighter, and more consistently?"

I didn't even have to think about it. I grabbed a club, looked out at the audience, and replied:

"I can tell everything about your swing just from your grip."

It sounds overly simple, but it is the absolute truth. The hands are your only connection to the golf club, and the way you place them on the handle dictates the entire story of your swing.

Got a weak grip? You're a slicer. Got a very strong grip? You're probably a hooker—or, more likely, you're fighting a hook with a steep, over-the-top move just to keep the ball on the planet.

Here is the fundamental chain reaction of the golf swing:

  1. Your grip determines your wrist angles.
  2. Your wrist angles determine your club face.
  3. Your club face determines your ball flight.

If your grip is off before you even take the club away, everything downstream is nothing more than a desperate compensation. You aren't swinging freely; you're just making in-swing corrections to save the shot.

The Epidemic of the Weak Grip

Most average golfers I see on the lesson tee have a grip that is far too weak. A weak grip naturally opens the club face during the swing. Because the brain is incredibly smart, it knows that if you swing normally with an open face, you’re going to hit it two fairways over to the right.

So, what do you do? You stall your body rotation and violently "flip" your hands at impact, desperately trying to square that face up at the last microsecond. It robs you of power, it kills your consistency, and it makes hitting a straight shot a matter of sheer luck.

The fix is simple: A stronger left hand, and a stronger right hand. ### How to Check Your Grip

Next time you're on the range, take your setup and look down. Here are the two checkpoints you need to hit:

  • The Left Hand: At address, looking down at your lead hand (left hand for right-handed golfers), you should clearly see 2 to 3 knuckles. If you see only one knuckle, or none at all, your grip is too weak. Turn that hand to the right until those knuckles appear.
  • The Right Hand: The lifeline of your right palm should fit snugly directly over your left thumb. The "V" formed by your right thumb and forefinger should point firmly at your right shoulder.

The Trust Phase

When you strengthen your grip like this for the first time, I guarantee the club face is going to feel severely CLOSED.

That is incredibly good news.

If a square face feels closed to you, it simply means you've been fighting an open club face your entire golfing life. You have grown accustomed to a flaw.

Now, here is the absolute key to making this work: Do not change anything else about your swing. Just change the grip, set up to the ball, and hit it. Let your swing adjust naturally to this new, more powerful position. Because you are no longer fighting an open face, you might hook a few balls to the left at first. That is perfectly fine. Celebrate those hooks! It means you are finally learning to trust a square club face and release the club with power, rather than flipping at it in panic.

Fix the grip, eliminate the compensations, and watch how much easier this game becomes.
