The Block Party Returns: America’s Favorite Club Pro Steals the Show at Aronimink

It feels like 2023 all over again. Michael Block, the 49-year-old PGA club pro from Mission Viejo, California, has officially reignited the magic.

Stepping onto the grand stage of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club on Thursday, Block did what he does best: he captivated the golf world, silenced the doubters, and fired a brilliant even-par 70 to put himself right back in the spotlight.

The Cinderella underdog of Oak Hill is back, and the East Coast galleries are already entirely on board.

Dissecting a Brutal Track

Aronimink was showing its teeth on Thursday. With chilly conditions, whipping breezes, and pin placements that demanded absolute precision, it was not a day for the faint of heart. Yet, Block played a game of strategic chess.

Despite an early double-bogey that immediately followed his opening birdie, Block never wavered. He leaned heavily on his elite short game and pinpoint accuracy, hitting 11 of 14 fairways and 13 greens in regulation, while sinking over 90 feet of putts.

"Just bunt it down the fairway, the main thing was get it in the fairway," Block said after his round. "Just kind of dissect Aronimink, which is what we did today. I dissected it to a 70. That's kind of cool."

Block was quick to note the sheer difficulty of the course's approach angles, stating, "This is such a second-shot golf course, it's insane. It's probably the most second-shot golf course I've ever played, and I'm old."

A Family Affair and a Bathroom Pep Talk

A massive part of Block's comfort on the course this week comes from the man carrying his bag: his son, Ethan. The father-son duo was up at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, meticulously poring over the yardage book and plotting their targets for every single approach shot.

Block credited that preparation—and his son's steadying presence—for keeping him anchored. But a little self-motivation didn't hurt, either. Block admitted to giving himself a brief bathroom pep talk before his round, looking in the mirror and telling himself, "You're actually pretty good, buddy."

Playing in his fifth straight PGA Championship with a self-described "zero to lose" mentality, that quiet confidence paid off in spades.

Slaying the Giants

To put Block’s opening-round 70 into perspective, you only need to look at how some of the sport's biggest names fared on the same track. By the time he signed his scorecard, Block found himself comfortably ahead of several pre-tournament favorites and only three shots off the early pace.

He has the crowd, he has the game plan, and he has the undeniable swagger of a man playing with absolutely nothing to lose. The weekend is calling, and the Block Party is officially back in session.
