Bucks Co. Dog Attack: Baby's Condition Upgraded, Dog Confined

PERKASIE, PA — The condition of a baby who was attacked by her family's dog this week has been upgraded from "critical" to "guarded," Perkasie Borough Police Chief Steven Hillias confirmed to Patch Friday afternoon. The 13-month-old girl remains hospitalized in Philadelphia following the Wednesday attack, he said.

Hillias also said the dog that carried out the attack is presently confined. He said authorities would be releasing the breed and age of the animal once confirmed through an investigation. The dog responsible for the injuries was owned by the family, police have confirmed.

The attack happened around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening along the 400 block of Grandview Avenue in Perkasie.

According to police, a heroic man stepped in to stop the attack and saved the baby's life after the 13-month-old's mother was not able to stop the animal during the frenzy.

A female neighbor heard the screams and went over to help, police said. Then, a passing motorist stopped and interjected and was able to stop the attack, police said. Police credited the man's heroic actions with saving the baby's life.

When officers arrived, the young girl had "serious" bite wounds on multiple areas of her body. Her mother also suffered bite wounds on her hands, arms and legs, authorities said.

The baby was transported to a local hospital and from there transferred to a hospital in Philadelphia. The man who saved the baby also suffered a serious leg injury after falling on the ice and snow while struggling with the dog. He refused medical care until the injured child was treated, police said.

He did not wish to be identified by police, authorities noted.
