Bucks County 4-H goes to Harrisburg
Local 4-H members got a behind-the-scenes look at our state leadership by spending a day at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg.
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Bucks County 4-H youth strengthened their leadership and citizenship skills through some hands-on learning at the Pennsylvania State Capitol on January 12, 2021.
Bucks County 4-H members, Layla Cotter of Quakertown, and David Dutertre, also of Quakertown, started off their day by meeting with local State Representatives where they shared their 4-H stories and successes. After meeting with some local leaders, they then got to watch the House of Representatives get to work.
The day provided these 4-H members the opportunity to learn about civic engagement and how Pennsylvania state government works. Also during their day the youth toured the Pennsylvania Capitol, where they had the privilege of standing on the floor of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. They were even introduced as guests of Pennsylvania State Representative, Craig Staats of the 145th Legislative District, on the house floor while the house was in session. The 145th district includes the Upper Bucks area where they both reside, and where both Cotter and Dutertre are 4-H Ambassadors for Bucks County. While the house was in session, they were able to listen the House Caucus passing appropriation bills along with its Senate counterpart. The bills passed by the Appropriations Committee regulate expenditures of money by the government of the United States.

The 4-H Ambassador Program strives to develop the minds of young people by increasing and promoting leadership activities through 4-H. Through participation in the 4-H Ambassador Program, youth will function as a positive role model for youth in 4-H, while serving to support the 4-H program through public relations.
