BUCKS COUNTY, PA —The DEA's next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held nationwide on Saturday, April 22 including at 49 locations throughout Bucks County.

The sites will be accepting unused, unneeded and expired prescription medications for proper disposal. Some sites will also be accepting sharps (syringes, needles, lancets, etc.).

Since its inception in 2010, Take Back Day has removed almost 17 million pounds of unneeded medications from communities across the country.

“The Take Back campaign is part of DEA’s continued efforts to protect our communities and create healthier environments by offering the safe disposal of medications,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “We appreciate the community support we see during these events and encourage everyone to remove unneeded medications from their home.”

The DEA has registered a record number of authorized collectors – pharmacies and medical facilities – to collect unused and unwanted prescription drugs year-round. Since April 2017,the DEA increased the number of authorized collectors from more than 2,200 to 15,000.

Drug Take Back Day is aimed at removing opioids and other medicines from the nation’s homes, where they are vulnerable to misuse, theft or abuse by family members and visitors, including children and teens.

According to the 2019 Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), when asked how they obtained prescription drugs they used without a doctor’s prescription, 42.9 percent of Bucks County students responded that they “took them from a family member living in my home."

More than 50 percent of people who abuse prescription pain relievers get them from friends or relatives, according to national statistics, with prescription and over-the-counter drugs the most commonly misused substances by Americans 14 and older, after marijuana and alcohol.

Participation in the Take Back Day is simple. Find the site nearest you by visiting bcdac.org or referring to the list below.
