DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Central Bucks Regional Police Department is joining the “Blue Envelope Program,” which was created to enhance communication between a police officer and a driver with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Created in Connecticut and recently adopted by the Perkasie Borough Police Department, the
program’s primary goal is to aid ASD drivers with document organization and to educate them about what to do and expect during a motor vehicle stop.
The "Blue Envelope" will contain a color photocopy of the individual’s driver’s license, vehicle registration card, insurance and emergency contact cards. On the outside of the envelope is helpful tips and instructions for both the officer and driver on how to successfully communicate with each other.

“Our department has adopted a proactive approach to educating officers about autism through ongoing training on how to recognize behavior/signs displayed and responding accordingly. The Blue Envelope Program is a way to reinforce this training and assists an ASD individual to know that they will be treated with tolerance and understanding,” said Central Bucks Regional Police Chief Karl Knott.
Blue Envelopes are available at police headquarters at 229 N. Broad Street, Doylestown, during regular business hours - Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
