Similar to Early Reader books, Decodables help new readers learn to read with the use of phonics skills. Decodable books allow children to practice the letter-sound relationships that they are learning. School Library Journal says that they ‘invite beginning readers to dive into books while offering achievable challenges as students master growing skills.’ (SLJ)

The goal of a Decodable is to help readers sound out or decode words. While these books include illustrations, they are designed not to distract new readers from the text.

The Decodable collection that is now circulating at Bucks County Free Libraries has 6 levels, with different levels focusing on different specific phonetic focuses. You can find Decodables at a library near you!
