Firefighters Put Out Trash Fire On Busy Buckingham Highway

A quick-thinking garbage truck driver dumped a load of garbage in the middle Route 202 when she discovered the trash was on fire.

BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — A quick-thinking garbage truck operator dumped her load of trash in the middle of busy Route 202 in Lahaska when she discovered the contents were on fire.

Midway volunteer firefighters responded to the scene and quickly put out the pile of trash with hose lines Tuesday afternoon, although the stretch of highway remained closed for an extended period for cleanup operations.

The incident happened along a heavily traveled stretch of Route 202 in front of the Hollyberry Square Shopping Center just west of Route 263 in Lahaska.

According to firefighters, the truck driver, realizing there was a fire in her truck, instinctively dumped the contents into the roadway saving the truck and giving firefighters easy access to extinguish the fire.

Midway’s Fire Police and the Buckingham Township Police Department handled traffic control.

Responding to the scene were Engine 5, Engine 15 and Tanker 5.
