Here's Today's Tip... Setting Goals

If you want to reach the next level in your golf game you have to set some goals.

However, if you don’t set the right kind of goals you’ll find yourself frustrated and stuck shooting the same scores over and over again.

What are the right kind of goals for a golfer to set? The answer is simple and easy to remember….golfers need to set SMART goals.

Specific. A vague goal like, “I want to lower my scores” simply doesn’t register with your brain. You’ve got to be more specific and set a goal such as “I want to lower my handicap to a 10” or “I want to make at least 1 birdie every 9 holes.”

Measurable. When you set a goal you’ve also got to establish a way to measure your progress. If your club has a computerized handicap system this is a great option. You can also use a program like Microsoft Excel to track things like birdies per round, putts per round, etc.

Attainable. If you’re a 20 handicap and the only goal you set is to win the Masters you’re likely going to end up frustrated and disappointed. Instead, focus on goals that are challenging but also not completely out of your reach. Dropping your handicap by 5 strokes is a great example.

Relevant. The most powerful goals are the ones that matter to you the most. You can set a goal to become the long drive champion at your club, but is that REALLY what’s most important to you? Or, would you be happier focusing on something like playing every course in your state?

Time-bound. If you really want your goal to be effective you need to set a specific target date to complete it by and hold yourself accountable to that date. If you decide you want to drop your handicap by 5 strokes before October 1st it will be much easier to start thinking through the steps you’ll need to get there.

Just remember...If you want to take your game to the next level you’ve got to focus on setting SMART goals!
