50-Car Backup On Swamp Road Reported After Tuesday Snow Squall
Eyewitnesses report a backup of as many as 50 cars on Swamp Road after a snow squall traveled through the area.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story had a headline that stated the backup was on Smith Road. The backup was on Swamp Road to its intersection with Smith Road. Patch regrets the error.
Doylestown, PA - A brief snow squall caused perilous travel on Doylestown area roads Tuesday night. Road closures were in place due to ice, officials said.
One area resident told Patch it took her three and a half hours to travel a few miles down Swamp Road to Apple Hill Road. As many as 50 cars were backed up to the intersection with Smith Road until at least 11:30 p.m., she said.
Resident Erin McDermott tells Patch she waited at a standstill for several hours following the evening snow squall. Police made their way car to car by foot, McDermott said.
By 11:30 p.m., McDermott made it home. There were four cars in ditches, with a “full inch” of ice on the road.
McDermott said Tuesday’s road conditions were the worst she’s seen in the ten years she’s lived in the area.
About a half inch of snow accumulated in a brief period of time Tuesday starting around 7:30 p.m. It seemed the ice that formed after was the culprit, however.
Roads conditions were “horrible,” McDermott said. Her sentiments were reiterated by numerous Patch readers, who said they also experienced delays in the following locations: Rt. 611; Rt. 202; York Road; and Forest Grove Rd, among others.
North West Street was closed from State to Doyle due to ice, Doylestown Fire Company No. 1 said. Local law enforcement warned travelers to use caution. In Newtown Township, police said at around 8 p.m. that roads were snow covered.
Solebury Police noted roadways there were becoming icy early Tuesday evening.
