How to Break 90 in Bucks County: A Skills-Based Plan
Top 100 Golf Instructor, PXG Staff Pro, Author of "Your Natural Golf Swing", and Founder of Imagen Golf

Quick Answer: How do you break 90 in golf?
To break 90 consistently, you must transition from a mechanics-obsessed mindset to a skills-based plan. This involves eliminating penalty strokes, getting off the tee safely, mastering distance control with your wedges, and eliminating 3-putts. Instead of chasing the "perfect" swing, focus on practical, measurable skills and data-driven feedback to optimize the swing you already have.
Welcome to the club. If you are reading this, you are likely part of the massive population of golfers who are desperately trying to crack into the 80s. You have hit some great shots at courses like Five Ponds in Warminster or Makefield Highlands in Yardley, but somewhere along the 18 holes, the wheels fall off.

At Imagen Golf, we have helped thousands of Bucks County golfers shatter their scoring barriers. As a GRAA Top 100 Growth of the Game Teaching Professional, my teaching philosophy isn't about tearing down your swing and forcing you into a cookie-cutter model. It is about identifying your unique biomechanics, reducing variables, and teaching you how to practice effectively.
If you want to break 90 this season, here is the skills-based plan to get you there.

The Skills-Based System: Stop Playing "Golf Swing" and Start Playing Golf
Most amateur golfers who shoot in the 90s don't lack the physical ability to shoot 89; they lack a system. At Imagen Golf, we utilize advanced data analytics, including V1 Sports technology and ground pressure data, to reveal the subtle flaws holding you back.
But on the course, you need to rely on practical skills. Here is the blueprint.
1. The Tee Shot: Play for Position, Not Pride
Breaking 90 does not require you to drive the ball 280 yards down the center of the fairway. As a World Long Drive Coach, I love speed, but for scoring, predictability is king.
- The Skill: Finding a "go-to" tee shot that keeps you in play 80% of the time.
- The Plan: If you slice your driver into the trees on 4 out of 14 holes, leave it in the bag. Hit a 3-wood, a hybrid, or whatever club guarantees you are punching your second shot from the short grass. Eliminating penalty strokes off the tee is the fastest way to drop 3-4 shots per round.
2. Approach Play: Shift Your Target Line
Golfers shooting 95 aim at the pin. Golfers shooting 85 aim at the fat part of the green.
- The Skill: Course management and understanding dispersion.
- The Plan: Stop flag-hunting. When playing approach shots, your only goal is to give yourself a putt. Aim for the center of the green on every single approach shot. You will hit more greens in regulation (GIR), and your misses will leave you with easier chips instead of impossible bunker shots.
3. The Short Game: The "One-Chip" Rule
If you miss the green, you should only need one chip to get on the putting surface. Chunking a chip, or blading it over the green, is a scorecard killer.
- The Skill: Consistent contact and distance control inside 50 yards.
- The Plan: Ditch the high-risk flop shots. Learn to hit a low-flighted bump-and-run with an 8-iron or pitching wedge. This reduces variables and keeps the ball on the ground like a putt. We drill this relentlessly at our outdoor training facilities in Doylestown and Newtown.
4. Putting: Speed is Everything
You cannot break 90 if you are constantly 3-putting.
- The Skill: Lag putting and distance control.
- The Plan: Spend 80% of your practice green time working on putts from 20 to 40 feet. Your goal isn't to make them; your goal is to leave the ball within a 3-foot radius of the hole (the "dustbin"). If you can eliminate 3-putts, breaking 90 becomes incredibly easy.
