Students at Delaware Valley College are gearing up to show off their display at the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, which opens Saturday.
Each year, Delaware Valley College students build a display for the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s show, and this year is no exception. This year’s flower show theme is “Celebrate the Movies” and will feature floral designs and gardens inspired by Hollywood.
Students from DelVal’s Flower Show course, which has four students in it this year, plus other student volunteers, staff, alumni volunteers and faculty work together to create the exhibit. They’ve been working on it for months, according to professors.

“We start right at the beginning of fall semester with the design and really, with the design you’re already starting to think about how to build it,” said Michael Fleishchacker, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Sciences. “We drove the first nail in October.”
DelVal’s exhibit is called “2139: The Rising Tide of Urbanism.” The display shows Philadelphia in the year 2139 and imagines how people might adapt to living in the city after the polar ice caps have melted, according to information from the college.
