DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Mercantile, an artisan shopping destination at the Doylestown Shopping Center, will be closing its doors in early 2023.

The operators made the announcement in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

“After long consideration we have come to the decision that our time of service to this incredible community will soon be coming to an end,” they wrote.

For the past two years, the retail space at the western end of the shopping center has provided a space where artists and art lovers meet, connect, and engage in a unique selling and shopping experience.

The idea grew out out the pandemic, which took away a main source of income for local artisans who no longer had public shows and venues to display and sell their wares.

“When we created this temporary project, it was born out of a need to help artists, makers, crafters, and small businesses most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the Mercantile operators. “We wanted to give them a safe and unique outlet to continue thriving during those incredibly difficult times.

“With this wonderful community’s continuing patronage, we successfully accomplished and even surpassed our goal! Thankfully COVID-19 is now officially no longer a situation that is impacting the globe as it once was. These talented individuals are now able to continue their growth once more at our local shows and other artistic venues as they did prior. We look forward to supporting them on their journeys and hope you will join us in following them as they continue to grow both locally and beyond.”

The Mercantile will officially be closing its doors on Sunday, January 22.

“A very special thank you to the Doylestown Shopping Center and its generous ownership for their partnership with this community project,” wrote the operators. “It would never have been possible if not for their continued participation and support.

“And most importantly, thank you all for your continued patronage over the years,” they continued. “This project could not have been the success it was without each and every one of you taking part of it. We are truly humbled and grateful for you all!

“We hope to see you all this holiday season, enjoying one last tradition with us before we say our final farewell.”

Rumors have been swirling for months that a major tenant is in the works at that end of the shopping center. However, a tenant has not yet been confirmed by the owners.
