SEPTA Papal Pass Lottery: What You Need To Know

Registration for the 24-hour online lottery will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, August 3.

A lottery for SEPTA Regional Rail passes during the pope’s visit to Philadelphia is Monday.

The passes are needed for all Regional Rail travel during Pope Francis’ visit on Sept. 26 and 27. SEPTA is selling the tickets through a one-day online lottery, after a website created to sell the passes crashed in July.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning on entering the lottery:

  • Registration for the lottery will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3. It will remain open until 11:59 p.m. that day. Click here to visit SEPTA’s website.
  • A special one day Regional Rail pass is $10.
  • Riders need purchase a pass for each day they plan to travel on Regional Rail. “Everyone who enters the lottery will have a chance to be selected but given the limited number of passes available for each station, not everyone will be selected to purchase passes,” SEPTA said.
  • Only one entry form per person can be submitted to the lottery
  • All valid submissions will have the same chances of winning the lottery, regardless of what time an entry form is submitted.
  • Before submitting an entry form, print a copy of the screen for your records
  • The first round of lottery winners will be selected by random drawing. These winners will receive an email on Thursday, Aug. 6 with a link to a secured website to complete the purchase of their Special One Day Regional Rail Passes
  • Pass purchases for the first round of randomly selected winners must be completed between August 6 - 9. Each on-line purchase will include a Shipping Fee of $1.95.
