Board Will Delay Vote on Layoffs

School district and teachers union will continue negotiations

A vote scheduled for this evening that could have led to the firing of 160 Easton Area schoolteachers has been put on hold.

In a statement posted on the school district website, the district and teachers union say that based on continuing negotiations, the vote -- which had been scheduled for this evening's school board meeting -- will be put on hold.

The board and union members met Wednesday evening to negotiate. The school district had been considering a plan that would involve laying off 160 teachers and cutting several programs, to help fill a nearly $13 million budget deficit.
