Breast Cancer Expert to Speak at Lafayette

Dr. Mark Graham, a North Carolina oncologist, will discuss the latest information on breast cancer diagnosis and therapy Thursday, Oct. 20 at .

According to a news release from the college:

Breast cancer treatment has been transformed since research released in 2001 proved that there are five different subtypes of breast cancer. Graham will review the breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA1 and 2), modern hormonal therapies, the role of chemotherapy, and new biologic therapies. [Graham] will explain how the treatment approach differs for the various subtypes, and discuss advances to treatment that are significantly extending life for patients with recurrent metastatic disease.

Now in private practice, Graham was part of the faculty at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for 14 years. 

He has published and lectured extensively in hematology/oncology with an emphasis on breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. 

He is in private practice in Cary, NC where his work centers on breast and colon cancer genetics, clinical trials and the use of circulating tumor cells to improve treatment approaches. 

Graham's resume includes an undergraduate degree from Harvard and medical degree at the Mayo Medical School. He did his residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center and completed fellowships in cell biology at Mayo Clinic and hematology-oncology and clinical pharmacology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
