1. 1 retiring assistant schools superintendent leads to 2 new jobs in Erie (goerie.com) — Erie School District is splitting one assistant superintendent role into two positions as longtime administrator Teresa Szumigala retires, and has hired Felicia Everson-Tuggle to lead teaching, learning and leadership starting in July. A second assistant superintendent for student services is still open, with a six-figure salary range, and residents can expect fresh leadership influences tied to Superintendent Natalyn Gibbs’ Tennessee connections.

2. Man dies in boating accident off Erie Bluffs State Park (goerie.com) — A fishing trip off Erie Bluffs State Park turned tragic Tuesday morning when a Butler County man died after his boat capsized on Lake Erie, despite extensive rescue efforts by local crews. Erie County 911, the Coast Guard, Lake City firefighters, and City of Erie divers all responded, rescuing four others and rushing the victim to UPMC Hamot, where he was pronounced dead.

3. NRHS Sets Cleveland Convention Events (wordpress.com) — Railfans will see Erie on the national stage this September when National Railway Historical Society convention attendees bus in for a behind-the-scenes tour of Wabtec’s locomotive assembly plant in Lawrence Park. The Cleveland-based convention schedule includes multiple excursions, but Friday’s Erie visit will spotlight the city’s rail manufacturing heritage and bring out-of-town visitors to the region for tours and lunch.

4. Erie Otters Select Two Forwards in CHL Import Draft (erienewsnow.com) — Erie Otters fans will see two new international forwards joining the roster after the team drafted Austrian scorer Paul Schuster and Finnish winger Luka Arkko in the CHL Import Draft. Both bring strong junior and international experience, and team officials say Arkko’s size and tenacity should fit seamlessly alongside Erie’s existing forward group.

5. Minority Community Investment Coalition receives grant for expansion, ‘Grow Erie' (yourerie.com) — A $225,000 grant from the Erie County Executive is giving the Grow Erie urban agriculture initiative and Minority Community Investment Coalition new resources to expand. Co-founder Gary Horton says the project already employs mostly neighborhood residents and will use the funds for marketing, bills, and reaching more communities while continuing to build jobs and training opportunities.
