Pittsburgh bests five other cities to earn $3,500 for the United Way of Allegheny County

Erie Insurance makes donation as part of its Service Station program

Erie Insurance put out the call to serve, and Pittsburgh-area residents answered. In May 2012, ERIE announced it was collecting pledges from anyone who wanted to do something good in the community. Pledges were collected as part of ERIE’s Service Station program and for every pledge collected, ERIE donated $1 to the local United Way.

Pittsburgh gathered nearly 1,000 pledges, beating out Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis, Ind.; Milwaukee, Minn.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Richmond, Va. to earn an additional $2,500 for its local United Way. Erie Insurance will now donate $3,500 to the United Way of Allegheny County.

Pledges were collected online and at local events like special exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and the Cultural Trust International Children’s Fair.

“It’s no surprise to me that Pittsburgh proved its tops at committing to serve the local community. I see it in my work every day,” said Bob Nelkin, president and chief professional officer of United Way of Allegheny County. “I believe Erie Insurance’s contribution, made possible by the commitment of the Pittsburgh-area community, keeps our region strong.”

“As both a Pittsburgh native and representative of Erie Insurance, I’m thrilled to see my hometown earn top honors in the ERIE Service Station program,” said Leah Micholas, vice president and Pittsburgh branch manager for ERIE. ”This program is yet another example of our commitment to service and to our local communities.”
