A lovely gift for small children (but I still read it too!)

A gift idea for small children, this book from the mid 50's is still a sweet, relevant lesson on respect for all animals

We all know about the Velveteen Rabbit, and Guess How Much I Love You, and so many other popular books that feature loveable animal characters.

But there is one book almost forgotten these days, and it has such a lovely lesson, so beautifully rendered, and ought to be revisited.

"Play With Me," by Marie Hall Ets, was first published in 1955. The illustrations (apparently also by Ets) are innocent and light-hearted, full of life and warmth.

The story tells of a small girl who goes to the meadow to play. She chases one animal after another, wanting to be friends. She begs them to play with her, as she scares them away. Finally, saddened and lonely, she sits on a tree stump to nurse her poor little broken heart.

As she sits there quietly, the magic begins to happen! First one animal, then another, then another...her quiet and her stillness wins their trust and brings them all out to her side. She is no longer alone, but in the company of all the animal friends she so wanted.

All she had to do was be still, be quiet, and be patient.

In a way that a very young child can understand, and in a manner that is not reproachful or preachy, this very important message is brought home. I can't think of a better gift for a child. I wish every single child heard this at least once!

The book is easy to find online as a paperback, and is under $6.
