No More Apologies for "People" Food!

Guilt-free sharing of real food.

As most readers may have figured out, . And a lot of folks come in with their eyes downcast, looking very, very guilty, to report to me that they know it is "bad," but they sometimes give their animals "people" food.

Relax, everyone.

Let's just take a look at the statement. I feed my dogs (it is usually dogs but can also apply to cats) people food. What exactly does that mean? We are feeding our dogs food. That is what it means. Simple as that. Something we are ourselves not afraid to eat. What could be wrong with that? We actually seek out and pay more for human-grade pet food.

Now, there are a few caveats, but not many. Sure, if you eat fast food and processed things, don't feed them to your dog. WAY too much sodium, preservatives, additives, colorings, etc. But, if I may be so bold, those things aren't any better for you than they are for Fang. So. As long as you are eating fresh, whole, real food, feel free to share almost any of it.

An animal getting only scraps and left-over stuff will almost surely not get all the necessary nutrients, so I am not advocating that this practice be a way of providing all the nutritional needs of your animal. If you do want to feed a home-made diet, there are lots of great recipes and resources to make sure you get the mix right.

For the occasional sharing, watch the carbs, of course. And the sugar and salt.  Don't give the dog the parts you don't want—the gristle, the big fat strips, etc. No spicy stuff. No onions, grapes, raisins, or chocolate. Avoid avocado pits and skin.  And for gosh sakes MAKE SURE THAT ALL COOKED BONES ARE REMOVED—chicken, beef, whatever kind they may be.

You want to share your honey glazed chicken with the dog? Debone it and enjoy the blissful look that steals over those brown eyes. Took too many green beans?  No problem. Charon to the rescue. Can't hide the brussels sprouts under your napkin? Cujo will oblige. Have just one bit of feta left, and nothing to do with it?  Old Yeller will be happy to handle that for you.

All this being said, your animal is not your compost device or disposal. Please, please, please keep your animal's weight under control. Dogs and cats should have waists. You should be able to feel their ribs, and even see slight contours where the ribs are. This is so important for their joint and heart health…but we'll save that rant for another week. For now….

No need for a "hangdog" look when admitting that your dog gets people food as part of his diet.
