Of Boomers, Oldies and Bad Grammar

Oldies' Music

If you haven't reached the ripe old age of 40, you may want to stop right here.

If, however, you grew up with 13Q and various other local Top 40 stations, this should be all too familiar. When we sang along, and we still do I'm sure, with our favorites, hideous grammar had its place in those wonderful lyrics. Musical license prevailed. For example, when The Pina Colada Song gave up "...Me and my old lady" as lyrics, that was fine, because somehow "My wife and I" just wouldn't work there!

Then there was Dr. Hook in "Sylvia's Mother" crooning  "... please don't say nothin." And we didn't even flinch when The McCoys in "Hang on Sloopy" sang "Sloopy I don't care what your daddy do." Bread took it to new heights with the title, "It Don't Matter to Me." Then there's the classic,  "I knew we was fallin' in love" from Doo Wah Ditty by Manfred Mann.

Even the Boss checked in with, "Don't make no difference what nobody says—ain't nobody likes to be alone" from his "Hungry Heart." And how about - The 5th Dimension singing about "One Less Bell to Answer." But according to the rules of grammar, it should have been "One Fewer Bell to Answer."

As you might guess, there are hundreds more, but would any of us 50+ out there trade any of it for what's out there today on the airwaves? I think not!
