Charter School Appeal Filed after Denial by Wilkinsburg Board

Former Wilkinsburg student Andre Tucker is filing an appeal to the state Charter School Appeal Board after being denied a charter by Wilkinsburg School Board for the fourth time.

The Post-Gazette is reporting that the first three proposals were for an all-boys school, which would grow from a middle school to a high school within five years. When the school board cited concerns about discrimination against girls in denying the charter, he proposed a coed school that was also denied.

Wilkinsburg superintendent Archie Perrin Jr. told the Post-Gazette there were "several issues" with the charter school application but declined to discuss the reasons until the appeal process is finalized.
