• Jump in special ed adds to Hazleton Area school budget (standardspeaker.com) — Hazleton Area School District’s rising special education enrollment is driving a major budget increase, including $8.1 million for renovating Freeland Elementary/Middle School with a secure entrance, new access drives, and a relocated playground. The district plans to hire at least 40 special education teachers, expand classrooms, and fund several construction projects while working to close a projected $4.2 million deficit before final budget approval in June.
   

• Legislators announce more than $12 million in LSA grants for Luzerne County (timesleader.com) — Freeland Borough is set to receive $281,444 to replace the roof on its municipal building, part of more than $12 million in Local Share Account grants across Luzerne County. Local legislators say the gaming-funded program will also support parks, roads, police, fire equipment, and community facilities in nearby towns, potentially improving services and amenities Freeland residents use around the region.
