📰 News we're reading

1. A Jewish federation had big plans for a community campus. Then the money ran out. (forward.com) — Harrisburg's Jewish federation is unraveling financially, forcing layoffs, the planned sale of the Alexander Grass Campus, and the relocation or closure of schools and programs that long anchored Jewish life in the city. Local rabbis, parents, and educators are scrambling to keep institutions like the Silver Academy and senior programs going while a transition committee and national leaders push for a leaner, more sustainable model.

2. 'Petey' the dog injured after being thrown from vehicle in Harrisburg (pennlive.com) — Harrisburg police and local rescue group Castaway Critters are seeking information after a small dog, later named Petey, was found badly injured on 13th Street Monday night, apparently thrown from a vehicle. Petey suffered multiple broken bones, had surgery in Chester County, and is now recovering in foster care while investigators and rescuers ask residents for tips and donations to support his treatment.

3. Foodborne illness outbreaks surge in 2026 as food safety cuts face scrutiny (fox56.com) — Harrisburg readers are hearing about a nationwide spike in foodborne illnesses, including a record surge in Cyclospora infections that now includes cases in Pennsylvania. While CDC officials insist key outbreak-detection systems remain in place, lawmakers and experts are questioning whether recent federal staffing and surveillance cuts are hampering the response and obscuring the true scope of infections.

4. Christian school looks to grow into newly renovated Cumberland County building (pennlive.com) — West Shore Christian Academy, part of the Christian School Association of Greater Harrisburg, is moving its high school into a newly renovated former Delta Dental building in Upper Allen Township, freeing space to grow enrollment across grades. The Harrisburg-area system, which also includes Harrisburg Christian School, plans future athletic facilities and says the modern campus will let it serve more than 1,000 local students with expanded programs.

5. State creates website for feedback on Pa. data center development proposals (northcentralpa.com) — From Harrisburg, Governor Shapiro has launched a new website where residents can report and comment on data center proposals in their communities. The move, tied to a fresh executive order, sets stricter standards on energy use, transparency, and environmental protection while pulling data centers from the state's fast‑track permitting program and boosting local control.
