Drug Documentary Screening And Discussion In Haverford To Address Opiate, Heroin Epidemic

"Chasing the Dragon" is about the struggles of prescription opiate and heroin addiction that the DEA hopes is a "wake up call."

The Haverford-Havertown community is invited to the Haverford High School Auditorium later this month to view a drug documentary and partake in a discussion after the screening that will take on the opiate and heroin epidemic in the area.

The Haverford Drug Alliance and the Haverford Rotary Club are sponsoring the event, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The event will feature "Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict," which was produced in a joint effort from the FBI and DEA, and a discussion on the film to follow.

The 45-minute film, whose title refers to the never-ending pursuit of the original or ultimate high, features stark first-person accounts told by individuals who have abused opioids or whose children have abused opioids, with tragic consequences, according to the FBI.

"The numbers are appalling—tens of thousands of Americans will die this year from drug-related deaths, and more than half of these deaths are from heroin and prescription opioid overdoses," Acting DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg said of the film. "I hope this [documentary]will be a wakeup call for folks.”

The post-film discussion will feature a parent of someone affected by addiction, a person in recovery, and experts in the addiction field.

Don't miss this event as it will help the community better understand the disease of addiction.
