Redistricting: Vitali Loses Portion of Haverford

Preliminary plan alters who represents Haverford in Harrisburg.

If plans in Harrisburg come to pass, state rep districts in Haverford Township could be splintered in 2012. Following the 2010 Census, state officials analyzed the data and released a preliminary plan for redrawing districts through the state. Haverford Township would be cut in two uneven pieces for House districts in the General Assembly.

Rep. Greg Vitali (D-166)—who currently represents the entire township—has been a vocal critic of redistricting. He stands to lose all of Haverford Township south of West Chester Pike, wards 1 and 9.

Vitali has held public meetings opposing portions of the plan, as it splits  and gives up odd sections in Upper Darby in Lower Merion Township. Additionally, Vitali loses his hold in Marple Township.

If the plan holds, some of Haverford Township would see a new state representative—Rep. Nick Micozzie (R-163). The lawmaker currently represents Drexel Hill and Lansdowne and stands to assume Upper Darby in addition to Haverford.

In protest, the Haverford Township Board of Commissioners opposing the change.

In the Senate, Daylin Leach (D-17) will retain his district with Haverford in place. The only change to the 17th District will be a pickup of Blue Bell, within Montgomery County.
