The victim – who was taken to Lankenau Hospital for treatment of a "significant" stab wound to the back and various cuts to his head, neck, arms and hands – could be released from the hospital Monday, police said.

According to police, the suspect waited for the victim to leave the school before attacking him.

"While we are deeply troubled by the violent act that took place today between two of our students, we are relieved to have learned that the victim is stable and will be released soon from the hospital and that the perpetrator is currently in police custody," Upper Darby School District Superintendent Dan Nerelli said in a statement. "The national issue of school violence hit home today, and while today's incident was an isolated event, we know that we must continue the conversation regarding school safety."

Nerelli thanked police and school security staff for their responses to the incident. He went on to say counselors are available for any student who needs help coping with Monday's incident.
