Woman Dies After Hanging Self In Delco Police Jail Cell: Report

A woman died after she hanged herself this month while in custody, marking the second hanging-related death in the Yeadon Police Department.

YEADON, PA — A woman who hanged herself in a Yeadon Borough Police jail cell earlier this month died from her injuries, marking the second hanging-related death of a person in Yeadon Police custody, according to a new report.

WHYY news reports the woman who hanged herself on Nov. 8 but survived has died.

The woman was found hanging on her sports bra from a doorknob on that date after being taken into custody on a domestic incident.

She survived the incident, but later succumbed to her injuries, according to WHYY.

According to Yeadon Borough Council President Sharon-Council Harris, the woman made comments about harming herself to police before she was able to hang herself.

She was hanging for about 20 minutes before she was found, Harris said.

The woman was left in critical condition, accoridng to Harris.

Her death is the second such this year.

Back in July, 22-year-old Shawn Morcho was found dead by hanging in a holding cell at the Yeadon Police Department after being taken into custody on drug possession.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Morcho's death as suicide by hanging.

The Inquirer reports the Delaware County District Attorney's office found no foul play in Morcho's death.

The DA's office is probing the Nov. 8 incident.

Harris has asked the Department of Justice to investigate the hangings, as well.

Two officers involved are on desk duty until the investigation is completed, according to the outlet.
