'Fantastic' Opening of 'Grease' Draws an Enthusiastic Crowd
Saucon Valley High School's spring musical opened Thursday night. The show runs through Sunday.
"All rise for the Rydell High alma mater," said an announcer. And as audience members rose from their seats, so too did the curtain on . Months of preparation and hard work paid off Thursday night, as the cast of more than 50 students transported fans of Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Frenchy and Kenickie back to the 1950s and the mythical Rydell High.
Saucon Valley's elaborate production of the popular musical definitely hit the mark, with sets and costumes perfectly characteristic of the 1950s. The casting of Patrick Kane as Danny Zuko and Kelsey Payung as Sandy Dumbrowski brought back memories of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in their famous film roles.
I am sure all those who were in attendance at last night's show will agree that the ensemble members of the cast also played their characters with pitch-perfect conviction. Especially impressive was the cast's performance of the hand jive, which was carefully choreographed and executed.

The on-stage performances by Saucon Valley High School staff members were a nice touch, and brought the production to an even higher level. Teacher Mario Marcozzi's portrayal of the benevolent Teen Angel, in a role he will share over the weekend with Principal Eric Kahler, was particularly outstanding.
Throughout the evening the comments coming from audience members included words such as "fantastic," "amazing" and "great!" But one comment overheard as the audience made their way out of the auditorium summed it up best: "What an energetic show! I am exhausted from watching." Energetic it was.
