Hellertown Library's Book Sale Offers Big Selection

kicked off their  Thursday evening with a “First Peek” event where bibliophiles could pay a minimal entrance fee and have first shot at the wide ranging selection.

The sale, which is being held at , will be free to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 8pm and a half-price sale will start on Saturday at 2pm.

Fifteen to 20 people were waiting for the doors to the sale to open on Thursday, however many were online booksellers looking for stock to re-sell.

"I was surprised to see people with scanners coming in. I'd never seen dealers doing that before," said local resident George Velas.

Jessica Goedtel, organizer of the book sale, credited the library's volunteers and book donors with helping to set the stage for a successful sale.

“We have lots of wonderful volunteers helping out and the library is so appreciative," she said. "The community support was great and the donated books will help increase the profit. We’re really hoping for a good turnout this weekend.”

Hardbacks are being sold for $2 and paperbacks are marked at $1, with many popular and mainstream authors' works available, including titles by Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, Laurell K. Hamilton, Patricia Cornwell and Jean M. Auel, just to name a few.

A total inventory of about 5,000 books has been amassed for the sale.

If you’re planning on raiding the fantasy and science-fiction section there are quite a few great reads that can recommend. The Lesser Kindred by Elizabeth Kerner is a great book for dragon lovers, Frank Herbert’s Dune is a must-read classic and there are also a number of Tolkien titles available.

The young adult section is a great place to snag summer reads for bored teens, with books such as Harry Potter, The Twilight Saga, Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series and titles by YouTube star John Green and Lauren Myracle (who was recently on NPR defending the YA genre) available.

Hellertown resident Jeanne Reilly bought some children’s and young adult books for her three kids, which are what she said she had been intending to purchase.

“I think there is a very good selection and it’s a wonderful way to support the library,” Reilly said. “There were a lot more books than I expected.”
