Softball Tournament a 'Hot' Ticket in Hellertown

What's the 'hottest' ticket in Hellertown this week?

If it's not a season pass to the Hellertown Pool, it's certainly a seat at the state softball tournament for 9 and 10-year-olds being held in the borough's .

In an email Thursday, Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline commented that "the place is packed, the girls and their families are having a wonderful time, (and) the competition is crazy."

"We are so happy to host this year's tournament," she added.

, the tournament is continuing to draw scores of fans in spite of an oppressive heat wave that pushed temperatures into the triple digits Thursday.

The conditions were so sweltering that at the conclusion of a 12:30pm game between Warren and Mount Union officials doused grateful girls with cool water, as they prepared to wet the field.

An official with the tournament said a mid-afternoon game scheduled for Friday would be played later in the day, in light of a forecast that calls for a high temperature of 98 and heat indexes of up to 106.
