The state tournament for 9 and 10-year-old Little League players being held in Dimmick Park is drawing crowds in spite of an oppressive heat wave hovering over the region.

In an email Thursday, Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline commented that "the place is packed, the girls and their families are having a wonderful time, (and) the competition is crazy."

The conditions were so sweltering that at the conclusion of a 12:30pm game between Warren and Mount Union officials doused grateful girls with cool water, as they prepared to wet the field.

An official with the tournament said a mid-afternoon game scheduled for Friday would be played later in the day, in light of a forecast that calls for a high temperature of 98 and heat indexes of up to 106.
