Viewfinder: The Michael Heller Homestead
The historic Lower Saucon property--which is open on weekends--includes an art gallery, a gift shop and period-furnished rooms, along with grounds to wander.
Perhaps you have sped past the Michael Heller Homestead on Friedensville Road without really paying attention to the beautiful old home and outbuildings which occupy its grounds. But on a cold and snowy Sunday, the homestead offered a warm and welcome respite from the bad weather, with lots to take in without having to travel far from home.
Part of the homestead's ground floor contains a wonderfully appointed and well-lit art gallery featuring the works of local artists. by Lower Saucon Township artist Donna Santiago will be on display beginning this weekend, and a special "Meet the Artist" reception marking the opening of the exhibit will be held Monday evening from 7 to 9pm (with a snow date of Feb. 8).
Opposite the art gallery is the homestead's gift shop, which is more like a hidden treasure trove, with many consigned and donated items for sale. Vintage necklaces, plates, artwork and china fill the shelves of the gift shop, which along with the art gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4pm, thanks to the dedication of many local volunteers.

The grounds of the homestead offer some wonderful opportunities for winter photography. And in milder weather, the homestead park offers a nature walk along the Saucon Creek. A traditional four-square herb garden is overflowing in spring, summer and fall with unusual and attractive plantings.
In 2010, the Heller Homestead was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its architectural significance.
