I just got back from running to a convenience store but was asked by one of the patrons why I carry a gun. After this experience today, I thought it might be helpful to post another blog on that topic.
Why do I carry a gun?
There are several reasons that I would like to explain and hear why others choose to carry or support gun rights. While I am technically registered as a Republican, I tend to have strong libertarian views but also strongly believe in the Constitution. I consider myself to be a "libertarian-constitutionalist". I think we can all agree that we each have the unalienable right to self preservation (defense). At my core, I fundamentally believe in the Constitution and Our rights which it protects - namely, the right to keep and bear arms.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the sport of hunting and shooting in general. Like any activity or hobby, shooting is something that takes years of practice to hone your skill, and repeated practice to maintain. There is truly something special about being able to take a firearm and hit a target that is 300 yards away - and that doesn't happen overnight.
But my real reason for actively trying to raise awareness and encourage responsible gun ownership is for self preservation. I refuse to be a victim - bottom line. I refuse to rely on others to guarantee my safety. I believe that I have the responsibility and obligation to care for myself and my loved ones without relying on the police to protect me.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. This statement is profound in its accuracy. God forbid I would ever have to use my gun for self preservation, but if and when that circumstance ever presents itself, there will not be time to call 9-1-1 and wait for the police to respond. Think about that for a minute and let it sink in.
Let's think of some common scenarios in which your life or limb might suddenly be put into jeopardy. You're asleep in your bed and are awakened by the noise of shattering glass and someone entering your house. You are in a fender bender in which the other driver becomes irrationally angry and potentially violent. You are in an unfamiliar area leaving a concert and walking to your car in the dark. Maybe you are just standing in line at the local liquor store when 2 masked men run in.
I look at it like this - if I am ever in a situation that would require me to draw and fire my weapon in order to save my own life or the life of someone in my care, there is no time to call and wait for the police to respond. It just wont happen. The situation is happening too fast; it is too fluid. I refuse to be a victim. There are dangerous people out there among us. People that are purely evil and would do harm to others for no logical reason.
Why do I carry a gun? Because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
