Election 2023: Theresa Brown For Hatboro-Horsham School Board

Candidates running in the May 16 primary election are providing background about themselves and their positions on the issues to voters in these profiles, which will run in Patch individually for each candidate.

HATBORO / HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —Theresa E. Brown is running as a Democrat for re-election to the Hatboro-Horsham School Board in the May 16 primary election.

Brown —and all the school board candidates —has cross-filed to run on the Republican and Democratic tickets.

She is one of eight candidates vying for four, four-year school board terms along with Bill Daly, David P. Brown, Denise "DJ" Schultz, Vince Varallo, Susan Hunsinger-Hoff, Janine Solley, and Clarice Schillinger.

What are the top issues currently facing your position and how do you plan to address them?
Safety is one of our priorities in Hatboro-Horsham. Safe schools place our students in a positive, safe environment that promotes social and creative learning. Not only do our buildings and facilities need to be safe, but our students need to feel accepted, welcomed, and safe amongst their peers and staff in order to create the best learning environment. We want to promote high-achievement outcomes for all of our students. We need to continue to increase students’ skills in all academic areas, encourage the professional growth of staff, and maintain a minimal tax increase.

Identify specific goals or ideas you have to enhance life in your position:
I believe it is important to be informed and active as a member of the School Board. As such, I represent the board on several committees, including the finance, curriculum, policy, and health & wellness committees. I also believe it is valuable for the Board to be represented within outside
educational agencies. I am proud to be a part of the Hatboro-Horsham Education Foundation where I also serve on the grant committee. I also act as a liaison to the Pennsylvania School Board Association which keeps the board informed about issues and trends in public education in Pennsylvania.

What in your experience or background prepares you for election to office?
I have devoted my entire life to education, with the bulk of my experience in public education. Prior to my tenure as a Hatboro-Horsham School Board member, I have 36 years of public
school experience, working with students from preschool through 8th grade as a counselor. I have
organized staff development for the entire staff, and developed, organized, and facilitated parenting groups.

I served on long-range planning and acted as co-facilitator of several committees as well as
participated on the curriculum committees. I established programs that were rewarded by the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for character education. I acted as a Local Educational Agency
representative for Individualized Education Plan (“IEP”) conferences and served as a mentor for newly hired counselors. I believe my experiences and training as a counselor prepare me for election to office.
