Dance Theatre of Pennsylvania will perform an encore production of the full-length ballet “Coppelia” at Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Bryn Athyn.
The Doylestown-based ballet company will feature the dancing of Alexandra Kochis and Christopher Budzynski, principals with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. The couple will return for the second year in the lead roles of Swanilda and her suitor Frantz.
This is the sixth year that Kochis and Budzynskihave performed with Dance Theatre. They danced the lead roles in the company’s previous productions of “Sleeping Beauty” and “Cinderella.” As a young dancer, Budzynski, a Bucks County native, was a member of Dance Theatre, founded by Marilyn Budzynski, a former dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet and artistic director of Dance Theatre.

Coppelia is a comedic ballet set to the music of Leo Delibes. The story opens in a village that houses the mysterious workshop of Dr. Coppelius. The toymaker has crafted a life-size doll named Coppelia that he treats as a daughter. Not realizing that Coppelia is a doll, Frantz is mesmerized by her beauty. Swanilda grows jealous of her rival, breaks into his workshop and stirs up trouble. But like all great story ballets, it ends with a happily-ever-after wedding.
