In Montgomery County, the primary election is shaping up to be a more compelling race possibly than the general election.

The primary could bring big changes to the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, as longtime Democrat Ken Lawrence Jr. is resigning at year's end. The appointed replacement for longtime chair Val Arkoosh, Jamile Winder, is facing primary challengers, and incumbent Republican Joe Gale will again face down his party's establishment.

Many of the races in the primary election are uncontested, meaning that whoever wins the election then goes on to represent their respective party in the November general election.

Some contested races —for judicial and school board —have cross-filings, meaning that candidates file as Democrats and Republicans with the top vote-getters going on the ballot in November.
