Natural Gas Usage Breaks Records as Residents Cope With the Cold

We used a record-breaking amount of natural gas to heat our homes during last week's brutal cold, PECO said.

Pennsylvanians used a record-breaking amount of natural gas to heat their homes during last week’s brutal cold, according to PECO.

On Monday, Feb. 15, customer demand for natural gas totaled 777,456 Mcf, PECO said. On Thursday, Feb. 19, natural gas demand totaled 766,365 Mcf.

The numbers surpassed the previous all-time winter daily total of 759,660 Mcf set on January 7, 2014, according to PECO.

Record-breaking cold descended upon the region last week. At times, it felt like minus 20 with the wind chill and residents dealt with three storms in a week.

The cold this winter has so far claimed at least five deaths throughout the region.
