Thousands to Step Out of the Darkness In Philadelphia On World Mental Health Day
Mindfulness expert and author Pax Tandon will help open AFS

On World Mental Health Day, thousands of people will gather at Philadelphia’s Navy Yard for a morning centered on remembrance, connection and, perhaps most importantly, hope.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Greater Philadelphia Chapter will host its 23rd Annual Philadelphia Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Saturday, October 10, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Marine Parade Grounds at the Navy Yard.
The annual walk brings together people who have lost loved ones to suicide, those who have struggled themselves, friends and families supporting someone they love, mental health advocates and community members who simply want to make a difference.

This year, author, positive psychology expert, and mindfulness teacher Pax Tandon will help set the tone for the morning by leading participants through a special mindfulness experience before the walk begins.
For Tandon, taking a moment to pause and become present is particularly meaningful at an event that can carry so many different emotions for participants.

The mindfulness experience will offer walkers an opportunity to center themselves, acknowledge why they are there, and feel connected to the thousands of people standing beside them before taking that first step together.
One of the morning’s most powerful traditions is AFSP’s Honor Bead Ceremony. Participants wear different colored beads signifying their personal connection to suicide prevention and mental health. Some represent the loss of a child, parent, sibling, spouse, or partner. Others signify a personal struggle or support for someone who is struggling.
Together, the beads transform individual experiences into a visible community of remembrance, support and hope — and a reminder that no one has to carry these experiences alone.
Beyond the walk, the morning is designed to create connection. Participants can visit mental health resources and the Healing and Support Tent, enjoy live music and food trucks, and even bring four-legged supporters to the Paws for Prevention area.
The Philadelphia event is part of AFSP’s nationwide Out of the Darkness movement, which raises funds for suicide prevention research, education, advocacy, and support for people affected by suicide.
Registration for the Philadelphia walk is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to register in advance and can also fundraise to support AFSP’s suicide prevention programs.
For anyone who has been affected by suicide, struggled with their own mental health, supported someone who has, or simply wants to stand beside others, the morning offers something increasingly important: a place to show up, connect, and know that you are not alone.
