Acme To Shut Down Towamencin Store

TOWAMENCIN, PA — The Acme in Towamencin is one of two Montgomery County locations that Acme Markets will shut down, the business confirmed this week.

The company will also close its King of Prussia store.

“Closing a store is always a tough decision," Dana Ward, a spokeswoman for Acme, said in a statement. "But we are focused on growing our business and reinvesting those resources into our existing stores along with aggressively exploring new sites. Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating our store portfolio and have to look at every angle of the business. These stores have not met our goals for a number of years and we have made the decision to deploy the teams and resources to other locations to serve our customers.”

Acme has faced growing competition in recent years in both of these markets from both Wegmans and Whole Foods, who have each established a foothold nearby. That's in addition to more traditional competition like Giant and ShopRite.

Employees will be given a chance to transfer to another store, Acme said.

Acme's Towamencin store is located on 1150 Welsh Road. The King of Prussia location is at 350 W. DeKalb Pike.
