Today I am grateful for alpacas. What? Here’s how it goes. I teach little kids to swim at the Y. A few weeks after I started another woman, Sandy, began teaching the same classes I am. Most of the time we’re too busy with kids to chat much, but lately a couple of the daycare classes have not shown up, giving us a half hour to chat before our next class.
It turns out Sandy and her husband raise alpacas. I didn’t even know what an alpaca was. Something like a llama? A mutant camel? I had an idea, just like I had an idea that Jakarta, Indonesia was someplace in Asia when I knew I’d be moving there. Sandy is starting a new project this year and hosting birthday parties at her alpaca farm. Somehow in conversation I mentioned Magic John. Now you know where this is going. Birthday Parties plus Magic John plus alpacas.

She gave me her card weeks ago and today it was so gorgeous yesterday that we decided to take a ride to see if we could find the place. It’s left of east jibip and north of where the devil lost his bicycle. The GPS did not recognize any portion of the address probably because it’s “the voices” time of the month or she’s in mental pause! I have no clue.

After a few false turns, we found it. I was pulling in the long driveway to turn around, when Sandy came out of the house. What a fun place. Chester, her big dog, was just what I needed. I’ve been lonesome for a pet lately, even though I know we can’t afford one. Chester is a big, friendly leaner, who “sees” things. I can relate.
Sandy gave us a short tour, showed us some of her original, amazing artwork, her small store and the deck where the magic could happen. I have a great imagination so I saw the place fully foliated, instead of in the throes of a dull spring, following a brutal winter. I bet it’s gorgeous with leaves on the trees.
The alpacas greeted us like long-lost friends. They leaned and move in unison and with their long necks and Don King toppers, they looked like a bunch of pre-teen-swaybots at an American Idol concert. And they smile. You gotta love an animal that smiles. People should take a lesson. Very, very cute.
Today I’m grateful for alpacas, even though a month ago I couldn’t have told you what one looked like, even if reaching my goal weight depended on it. What’s not to like? We have the same haircut. . .and smile.
